WROUGHT IRON PLANT POT STAND

I love wrought iron. The unlikely combination of fanciful, twirly scrolls and industrial, no-nonsense strength is so unique. A small piece can really add a surprising twist to a traditional interior: Look at this little stool I made, for instance…

The whole idea started with a simple wrought iron plant pot stand. It was very strong, (some aren’t though so you have to be careful to check that), and it had the additional advantage of having a three-pronged structure joining the legs to stop splaying. I had a round piece of wood cut to size, a piece of foam laid on top, and finally I upholstered with hessian – a lovely rustic complement to the wrought iron.

Using black fabric paint, I stencilled the word “sit!” on to give the stool a more quirky feel, and finally screwed the seat base on to the legs.

This idea has lots of potential though – a taller plant pot holder can make for great bar stools, providing they are strong enough!

Or how about a lovely side table? I have a couple at home with wooden tops, but as an alternative, look how beautiful a mirrored top looks!

If you’re interested in having a go at upholstery for the first time, have a look at this Youtube video (You just need a staple gun and you’re set).

As for the fabric, this stool would work in almost any material, but if you like hessian you may also like to consider other colours. Check these out on Fabric UK.

Lastly for the design, I made and cut this stencil myself, but there are lots of lovely ones around. Have a look at these great ones available to buy on ebay
